How You Can Help Houston While Helping Yourself

How to Help Houston, 5 Days of Hard Labor Online Test Group, American Red Cross Disaster Relief and Beachbody, Workout and Give Back, Beachbody on Demand Free Trial

So I just came back from a trip in South America and I heard about all of the things that were going on with Houston Texas. I was like WHOA, how can I help, and is it safe for me to go to Texas for my next film project in Mountain Home, TX?

I don't watch the news too often, because heck I don't even own a TV, so when the news hits social media, you know it's big! The amazing thing is that once there is a natural disaster, the options for helping is in the hundreds. SO HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK RIGHT?

And it doesn't matter what you do, everything counts! Whether you are making a trip to help out hands on, donating food and/or supplies to your favorite charity, or giving through monetary ways, it's whatever you can do to help.

So where do I start with this?

Before all the craziness started, and Harvey hit the fan, I originally announced that I would be starting a new online test group for this new upcoming challenge called "5 Days of Hard Labor". The online test group is set to begin on September 5th, and I'm not really going to get into what it is, but you can get more details by clicking here.

This post is focused on how we can help HOUSTON.

This is the exciting part, I just found out that the CEO of the company that I work with (Beachbody) will be donating $1 to America Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief for everyone who does ONLY 1 WORKOUT from the "5 Days of Labor" challenge. How cool is that!!! In fact, up to $100,000 will be donated. One of the coolest things about what I do, there are always wonderful ways to giving back to the community =)

So now instead of me just being able to rip people off the couch like you and your friends through my online test group, I am now able to give back to the people of Houston, now how's that for killing two birds with one stone!!! =) The best part is that YOU CAN JOIN ME on this FAB mission! =)

SO HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE AND HELP HOUSTON

It's very simple. If I am already your Free Coach, and you have a Beachbody on Demand account, then you're all set, just message me and let me know that you are ready to start the "5 Days of Hard Labor" on September 5th, and the CEO Carl will donate on your behalf. You just have to make sure that you do at least one workout, I'm sure that you can do that! =) Up to $100,000 will be donated to Houston, and all you have to do is make a decision to do one workout!

Make sure to request to be added to my exclusive mobile app group if you're not already added, this is optional of course, and always free!

If you would like to participate, and I am NOT your Free Coach yet, you can simply go here and just click on the FREE TRIAL link. When you do that, I will automatically be your Free Coach, and you will be able to try out the "5 Days of Hard Labor" workouts for free on Beachbody on Demand. Being that the free trial is for 14 days, you will be able to actually do the workouts twice if you wanted to, along with the other $6,000 worth of workouts inside the digital library. You will love it, I promise you!

Being your Free Coach simply means that I will be able to give you advice, motivate you, keep you accountable to your goals, and just be there for you, online anytime!

HOUSTON, WE NOW HAVE A SOLUTION!

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?

That's okay too =) Just connect with me here on Facebook, or simply message me!

Island Hopping in Palawan - Philippines

Island Hopping El Nido Palawan - Philippine Island Hopping - Tour C El Nido Palawan
Island Hopping - El Nido, Palawan

So I finally had the opportunity to upload my Island Hopping video from Palawan, Philippines. It was so much fun, I took one of my cousins from Manila with me (he's never been there) and we had a blast together!

Watch Island Hopping Video Below!

I was on the island of El Nido for about a week and also found a gym called the Peak Corner Gym (not sure if it's still there) because I am always looking for a place to workout and keep my fit on all over the world. The day pass was something like only $1.50 US =) The workout that I did in this particular video was a P90X/Body Beast Hybrid workout, which is perfect to maintain my strength for my adventure travels. I ended the workout with a run on this manual treadmill, it was the first time that I've ever been on a non-electric tread, and it royally kicked my ass!

My Strength Marathon Training Program with P90X

Strength Marathon Run Training with P90X
My Strength Marathon Training with P90X

I started running back in mid-2011 at the age of 40 years old. Contrary to what some of my friends believe, I was actually never a runner! In fact, just the thought of running made me sick to my stomach. I was always active when I was young, and was involved in extreme sports such as skateboarding, surfing, martial arts, and mountain biking.....but never running!

Things change as you get older, and for people who are in my age bracket, you are either a couch potato or super fit, there really is no in between, at least from what I've seen in my network of friends.

I started running when my brother introduced me into the sport of obstacle course racing, but around that time, someone told me about this marathon in Boston where you had to qualify. After doing my first obstacle course race, I made a decision to make running part of my daily routine. I ended up doing a half marathon even before I did a 5K, and finished with a 1:36 time with an average of a 7:19 pace per mile. I was amazed what my P90X training has done for me because I have never ran before in my life. It's amazing what that program did for me!

Strength Marathon Run Training with P90X

I got heavily involved with obstacle course racing in late 2011, and pretty much forgot about my Boston Marathon goal. The main reason why I loved OCR (obstacle course racing) was because it didn't just focused on running. As an OCR athlete, you are required to have overall strength and endurance especially if you want to be competitive. After years of racing and even developing a project to help the sport grow, I am now focused on my Boston Marathon goal once again. I just want to mark it off of my bucket list =)

I continue to be involved in obstacle course racing, and if it wasn't for my love of the sport, I would not have become a runner. I really owe it all to my success with P90X (thanks to my brother), and the sport of OCR. Now I am focused on the Boston Marathon.

I have started a 16 week marathon training program in which I will have run over 600 miles in 4 months. But I will not just be running, I will also be incorporating strength workouts from P90X, Body Beast, and some interval training from various Insanity programs such as Asylum and Max 30. The tricky part about strength training while endurance running is finding the balance. You can't build too much mass or else it will slow your running pace, but you don't want to just run or else you will lose your muscle mass and upper body strength, and that's something that I do not want to do especially if I plan to continue obstacle course racing as well.

Strength Marathon Run Training with P90X

I decided to try out the Marathon Training Program from Nike+. The coach programs are absolutely free, and it is very easy to follow. I live a pretty busy life as a Full Time Beachbody Coach, so I enjoy working out and having a program to guide me, so I can think about other things like family, travel, and business. The Nike+ Marathon Training Coach Program fits into my lifestyle, and so far it's doing well. If you are not training for a marathon, there are other training programs for 5K, 10K, and half marathons, so it's great for all fitness levels.

I incorporate about 3 strength workouts into my week. For the most part, I will normally plan a LEG DAY (such as P90X Plyometrics, Body Beast Build Legs, X3 Triometrics etc) on Mondays. On Wednesdays I do an upper body workout (such as P90X Chest and Back, Body Beast Bulk Chest, X3 the Challenge etc) and then on Friday will will either do another upper body workout or full body interval workout (Asylum Speed and Agility, T25 Total Body, Insanity Max Interval Sports Training etc). On Thursdays which are normally a cross-training day, I will either mountain bike or do some sort of stretching workout (such as P90X X Stretch or X3 Yoga). On Sundays, I will do more stretching and just relax.

A sample of my 16 week Strength Marathon Training Program:
- Monday (Leg Day + Run)
- Tuesday (Run)
- Wednesday (Upper Body + Run)
- Thursday (Cross-train and/or Stretch/Yoga)
- Friday (Upper Body or Full Body Interval Training + Run)
- Saturday (Long Run)
- Sunday (Rest and Recovery/Stretch)

Strength Marathon Run Training with P90X

That's just a sample of what my week looks like with my Strength Marathon Training with P90X. I am always listening to my body, so if I am feeling tired or over-trained, I will take a rest day to ensure that I do not injure myself. Recovery is very important to me as I have overtrained in the past many times, and it doesn't feel good at all. Safety first guys! Nutrition also plays a key role (80%) in my training program and I will be drinking my Shakeology along with my normal eating plan of fresh whole foods, lean meats, whole grains, nuts, and lot's of greens, fruit and WATER.

Strength Marathon Run Training with P90X

I have never done a marathon before, so I am pretty excited to sign up for my first one after I am done with my 16 week program. After my first marathon, I will see how much I have improved, and then I will go into my 2nd marathon training program which will be a lot more intense with longer runs.

If you would like to join me on Nike+ or workout with me online with either my Free Fitness Group or my Online Challenge Group, feel free to message me, I'd love to run and workout with you! As always, stay active my friends! =)

How Much Protein Do I Need?

How Much Protein Do I Need?
How Much Protein Do I Need?

Many people enjoy eating high-protein foods because they believe that protein will make them grow big and strong. Is that what you think? Let's take a look at what protein really does.

Unlike carbohydrates and fats which contain only carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, protein also contains nitrogen and other elements essential for life. Proteins are made up of several amino acids which are building blocks that are hooked together. Although there are many different amino acids (at least 20), only 9 are called essential amino acids because the body cannot make them; they must be obtained from the diet. That's why we must eat protein to take in the essential amino acids.

How much protein should I eat?
Most people consume about 150 to 200 grams of protein each day which is more than enough. Protein needs are determined by the following factors: age, body weight, and activity level.

Many athletes think that if they eat more protein their muscles will get larger, but this is false. Excess calories from protein can be converted to fat and stored. Not only that, the liver and the kidneys are put under a lot of strain when processing large quantities of protein.

How much protein do I need?
Suppose you weight 175 pounds and are doing both extreme strength and endurance training. Your protein needs would be 0.6 to 0.8 grams per pound of body weight. Check out the examples and how to calculate your protein needs below:

Protein Requirements for Strength Training:
Research has shown that the protein needs of strength athletes and endurance athletes are quite similar. The calculations are the same as the above.

The excess protein in an athlete's diet, not required by the body, is often around 100 grams per day. Because muscle is 20% protein, the additional 100 grams of protein per day should result in a gain of 500 grams of muscle per day, or about 1 pound of muscle per day.

Concerns with Very High Protein Intakes:
- Increases the work load of the kidneys and in the extreme cases result in kidney failure. In some individuals this practice has resulted in hypertension.
- Can be dehydrating especially during endurance events if additional fluids are not consumed.
- High intake of free amino acids may cause diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
- Creates imbalances of the essential amino acids.

The Benefits of Obstacle Course Racing

The Benefits of Obstacle Course Racing - BattleFrog Series Discount Code
The Benefits of Obstacle Course Racing

I remember the first time I did an OCR (obstacle course race), it was in back in 2011. I just completed a few rounds of P90X and my brother told me that he was planning on traveling from Pensacola, Fl to North Carolina for a Warrior Dash. Back then, there wasn't very many races like there are today, so to think how crazy it was to drive 12+ hours just to run a 5K in the mud........we must have not been thinking clearly =). But after that race, I crossed the finish line with something that I've never felt before. I felt accomplished. I know that might sound crazy, because I've accomplished things in my life before, but never like this. The camaraderie was nothing I've ever seen before. People helping people. It was like everyone was happy even though they were challenged and "dirty". It was humans being humans, it was primal.

OCR People Are Awesome - Watch Video!

That was the beginning of my OCR addiction.

I wear my race shirts pretty much everywhere that I go (because I have a ton of them), and I get a lot of feedback. Some positive, some negative, but most of the time, people are just curious. I always say the same thing "you just have to try it one time". Obstacle Course Racing has changed my life in many ways, so I just wanted to share what I feel have been the prime benefits of OCR based on my experiences.

The BENEFITS of Obstacle Course Racing:

1.  GETS YOU OFF THE COUCH - I find that most people dislike health and fitness because they feel that is is not fun. No matter how beneficial it is to stay active, people just don't envision it as something that they have to do. Obstacle Course Racing has changed that. It has taken the once "couch potato" who has never ran or lifted weights before, to conquering mountainous terrain, rope climbs as tall as buildings, to ice baths and barbwire crawls. Fitness is now fun and exciting! It's how we humans were meant to play....outside.

2.  NEW FRIENDSHIPS - Have you ever been to a social event where you felt out of place? You know, like there is nothing to talk about! #Awkward - The amazing thing about OCR events is that everyone is on the same page as you. Everyone goes through the same struggles. We all cross the same finish line and share stories about cramping, training, how many burpees we did, and getting through that one tough obstacle. The camaraderie is what sells these races. It's what brings people together. It's not about the race, it's about the people who continue to challenge themselves. It's about family.

3.  CONSISTENT GOALS - I know a lot of people who have a tough time setting goals. OCR People are a little different. They set goals to become a better athlete to conquer the next race. Goals are important to the OCR athlete because they want to always do better at the next race. When you set goals, workout, eat healthy, help others....something happens, you become happy and ultimately live a better life. You excel at your job and/or business, and you become a better human. Is there anything else?

4.  STRESS RELIEVER - Has there ever been a time where you said "I regret that workout?" I don't think so. Working out releases stress, and competing or participating in an obstacle course race is no different. I've seen people at the start line complaining about how cold it is, or how dull their relationship is with their spouse, how much they hate their job etc. But once they cross the finish line, what was once taken over their mental space became all but forgotten. At the finish line, there is nothing but tears of joy, big smiles, and lots of hugs! That's where the OCR magic happens!

5.  PROMOTES TRAVEL - I was in Laos (SE Asia) a few months ago, and I met a guy from France who had a Spartan Race shirt! I honestly felt like we were brothers! I've seen people travel to races that have never traveled outside of their city before. OCR has turned athletes into groupies, following races wherever they can get their fix! For months at a time, I would travel from one race to another, every weekend and see the same people. It's amazing! More than amazing is how expensive this hobby is, and people still are willing to pay for it. OCR is a fitness movement that is going nowhere but to the top!

6.  REWARDING - As if crossing the finish line isn't rewarding enough, Obstacle Course Racing can reward you with things like a finisher medal, a beer, a T-shirt or a head band. It's pretty crazy what people will do for a beer! And for some athletes, it has opened doors to big sponsorships. It has also given athletes and investors a chance to become entrepreneurs not only to benefit themselves, but the OCR community as a whole.

7.  VARIETY - I remember when it was all about Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, and Warrior Dash. Now there are other companies such as BattleFrog Series coming out of the woodwork and taking OCR to the next level. There are literally hundreds of OCR events now! Depending on where you live, you can almost always find an OCR every weekend.

8.  KID FRIENDLY - Remember when people would make an excuse not to come to an event because they have their kids? Well, that's not a good excuse anymore because OCR has made a point to accommodate the little ones too! There is nothing better than doing a race, then having your kids do one right after you. A family who races together, stays together! Just imagine how healthy and fit your children will grow up to be if you introduce them to the sport. You never know......they may be the next OCR Rockstar! If not, they will be super healthy and fit, and nothing beats that!

9.  CHARITY - I don't think I've ever attended a race event that did not give back to the community. I mean I know that there are some shady ones out there, but for the most part, all OCR companies are committed to giving back. I don't know about you, but It's just a good feeling to know that when you are running a race, meeting new friends, visting new places, and getting super fit that at the same time you are part of something much bigger, and that is making a difference.

8 Foods That Can Get You Stacked

8 Foods That Can Get You Stacked - Body Beast on Demand
8 Foods That Can Get You Stacked!

Guys and "some girls" are always looking for ways to gain muscle mass. I mean, what guy out there  hasn't ever thought of getting STACKED! There's really no secret to gaining muscle mass naturally. It's pretty simple, if you stay consistent, lift heavy, and add these 8 ingredients to your nutrition on a weekly basis, you will soon to be stacked.

8 FOODS THAT CAN GET YOU STACKED:

1. ALMONDS - Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can help prevent free-radical damage after heavy workouts, and almonds are hands down one of the best sources of alpha-tocopheral vitamin E. The less damage from free-radicals, the faster your muscles will recover and that's when your muscles grow.

2. EGGS - The protein in eggs has the highest biological value of any food including beef, but you have to eat the yolk. Other than just protein, eggs also have vitamin B12 which aids in fat breakdown and muscle contraction. Eggs are packed with other vitamins and minerals such as riboflavin, folate, B6, B12, D, and E, phosphorous, iron, and zinc.

3.  SALMON - It's packed with high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3's are known to decrease muscle-protein breakdown after your workout which improves recovery. Why is this important? It's quite simple, because in order to build muscle, you need to store new protein faster than it takes for your body to break down the old stuff. Plus, consuming Salmon reduces your risk of heart disease and diabetes, because who wants that anyways.

4.  YOGURT - Has one of the best combinations of protein and carbs for exercise recovery and muscle growth. It's recommended to buy the regular ones with fruit at the bottom, and not the sugar free ones. The extra carbs from the fruits will boost your blood levels of insulin, which is one of the ways to reducing post-exercise protein breakdown.

Meet Local Fit Singles - It's Free!

5.  BEEF - Beef is a major source of iron and zinc which are two crucial muscle-building nutrients. It's also the number one food source of creatine, which is your body's energy supply for pumping iron. For maximum muscle mass without all the unwanted calories, shoot for "rounds" or "loins".

6.  OLIVE OIL - Also known as "Liquid Energy", the monounsaturated fat in olive oil can act as an anticatabolicnutrient, which can prevent muscle breakdown by lowering levels of a sinister cellular protein called tumor necrosis factor-a...I know, BIG WORDS! The extra virgin variety is better because it has a higher level of vitamin E.

7.  COFFEE - Bottom line, fueling your workouts with caffeine will help you lift longer. On a recent study from Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, they found that men who drank 2 1/2 cups of coffee a few hours before an exercise test were able to sprint 9 percent longer than when they didn't drink any. And since sprinting and lifting are anaerobic exercises (requires no oxygen), a little jolt of some JOE can help you pump more reps. If you have a history of high-blood pressure, then skip this.

8.  WATER - Did you know that muscles are 80% water? Me either! Even a change of as little as 1% in body water can compromise your exercise performance and recovery. Just to make sure that you are not dehydrated throughout the day, try weighing yourself before and after your workouts, then drink 24 ounces of water for every pound lost. FYI, the more dehydrated you are, the slower your body uses protein to build muscle.

So there you have it. 8 Foods That Can Get You Stacked! If you are interested in joining my Body Beast Fitness Challenge and Accountability Group, message me! I'll be sure to help you with your muscle mass goals.

BEST Outdoor Gyms in Bangkok, Thailand

Best Outdoor Gym - Bangkok Thailand - Benchasiri Park, Lumphini Park
Best Outdoor Gyms in Bangkok, Thailand

I've been impressed with the health and fitness community in Bangkok, Thailand. There are a plethora of gyms and outdoor parks to help you stay active whether you are a local or someone just like me who is just passing through as a traveler.

I've been to a few gyms in Bangkok, but there is just something about working out at an outdoor park. It's like being primal, and being one with nature. There are plenty of outdoor parks in Bangkok, but not all of them have outdoor gym equipment. I have listed and added some photos of the two best outdoor gym parks in Bangkok. If you ever make it out to Thai Country, and you are looking for a place to workout for cheap or FREE, then you'll want to bookmark this page!

BENCHASIRI PARK

I really liked this park! It was only quick 10-12 minute walk (or 5 min run) from my downtown guesthouse. There are lots of activities that you can do here such as people watching, picnic, taking your kids to the playground, playing outdoor sports with the locals like: skateboarding (yes, there is a mini skate park), volleyball, badminton, basketball, swimming and running (2k per lap). And if you want to workout, then there are lots of outdoor fitness equipment throughout the park. The area that I liked best was where the benches and pull up bars were (towards the back of the park). This is where most of the locals go to do calisthenics and really show off their strength. There are also some food vendors offering snacks and beverages, non-alcoholic of course.

LUMPHINI PARK

This is the BEST outdoor gym park in Bangkok hands down! If you are a workout enthusiast, then you definitely want to check out Bangkok Gym, which is the largest outdoor gym area within Lumphini Park. There is nothing fancy about the gym equipment, and it's very basic, but it had everything that I needed to do my workouts. Bangkok Gym is free for locals, and only 20 Baht ($0.60 cents) day pass fee for non-locals. I loved the fact that you could do your strength workouts, and go out for a run in the park. The running/bike path (2.5km) runs right in front of the outdoor gym. There are also all kinds of other fitness equipment throughout the park which is along the running path. If you would rather workout indoors with A/C, then the park also has an indoor gym which you have to be a member, and membership is only 40 Baht per year, that's $1.21 USD =) This membership also includes a nice swimming pool. Talking about super cheap! Almost every night after 5:30pm there is a free group cardio workout at the park.
