For the record, I am a Full Time Star Diamond Beachbody Coach, and also a PROUD Filipino-American. I decided to create a blog post about this to help other Filipino-Americans understand that it is very possible to become successful as a Beachbody Coach, as well as an ENTREPRENEUR.

I have been a Beachbody Coach since late 2010, and when I started, there were not very many filipinos pursuing the goal of becoming a Beachbody Coach. Even to this day, you do not see very many Filipinos on the recognition stage at the Beachbody Coach events. My question that I always ask myself is WHY? Filipinos are one of the most hard-working, loyal, and committed people on the planet, so why aren't there very many filipinos flocking to the opportunity? Since my success with P90X in late 2010, I have been contacted by hundreds of filipinos from all over the world about getting in shape. One of the questions that I always get is "Can I still get good results while still eating filipino food?" Yes, there is a huge difference in the food culture with the filipino community, but just like anything, it's all about wanting to change some things in your life, to change some things in your life, and sometimes it means having to do things differently from what you're accustomed too.

There are many reasons why I believe that you cannot find very many filipinos striving for success as a Beachbody Coach, or an entrepreneur for that matter, and I will share some of them with you below, but I will mainly focus on ways that filipinos can be successful in this fast-growing industry. Before I begin, I would like to say that I love my filipino culture, and this post does not represent all filipinos. I know that there are many filipinos who are moving up the ranks in the Beachbody Coaching Business, but it would definitely be nice to see more. Also, for the record, I do not support and promote racism, and although this post is about success as a filipino Beachbody Coach, anyone can use and customize this information to succeed as a Beachbody Coach whether they are filipino or not. Beachbody Coaching is for everyone!

Here are some ways to become a SUCCESSFUL Filipino Beachbody Coach:

WHITE RICE - Get rid of it! Now this might seem pretty intense, but the truth hurts. It's no secret that if you want good results (you know like abs), it is best to get your CARBS from whole grains. Trust me, it was very tough for me to switch from white rice to brown rice, but my goal was bigger than my craving for eating white rice. You don't have to quit cold turkey, try eating it in moderation first, then slowly make the switch to brown rice. Once you have achieved your health and fitness goal, you can simply eat it as a cheat meal every now and again. This goes for a lot of filipino foods that are not very healthy. In order to become successful as a Beachbody Coach, it starts with you, making yourself better and healthier. Just because you do not eat white rice everyday doesn't mean you're a filipino sell out, it means that you care about your health, your life, and your family, so don't let anyone tell you differently. I've seen way too many filipinos live short lives because of chronic illnesses that could have been prevented by eating healthier foods. Make good food choices, be open to Beachbody Fitness and Nutrition, and share it with the community, you can make a difference!

NOT ALL SUCCESSFUL FILIPINOS ARE DOCTORS - Growing up in a filipino household and attending a lot of filipino events, there was always people talking about how successful this filipino doctor was, and how rich they were as a medical professional. Almost every single time, I would hear someone brag about how rich their doctor friend was. I mean, I get it already. These people have worked hard for what they have, but what about the other successful people? What about the restaurant owners, the financial gurus, the self-made people, and franchise owners? Why weren't they getting any credit? I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. My grand parents owned small retail shacks and restaurants. My father ended up owning a number of restaurants, and even a very successful catering and concession business in Florida. I grew up wanting to be in business for myself. The idea of working for someone just DID NOT interest me one bit, and I knew at an early age that it wasn't for me. So yes, I get it. Not a lot of filipinos grew up in households with entrepreneur minds, but that doesn't mean that you cannot be one. Beachbody Coaching teaches you how to become an entrepreneur, and how to make it on your own. Most filipinos have the mind set of working for other people all of their working lives, it's how they were raised. But I want to tell you that filipinos come from a very hard-working culture, so why not work hard for yourself? All it takes is a decision, because you already know what hard work and dedication is all about. So take that hardcore work ethic, and go in business for yourself, it will be a lot more rewarding! There are many medical professionals who have retired and have gone on to make Beachbody Coaching their full time gig. Isn't is cool to be able to help people as a medical professional as a hobby versus a career? Doctors volunteer their services and help people all over the world. Whether you are a doctor, lawyer, or whatever.... Beachbody Coaching can allow you the freedom of doing your passion when you want, where you want, and most importantly, on your own terms. Now that's freedom!


INFLUENTIAL -  We all come from a culture where we are easily influenced by media, and other things such as your job, friends and family. I think it's ok to be influenced, if what is influencing you is positive and can better your life. I think that this is always a challenge by not just filipinos, but for everyone. I remember growing up and hearing conversations like: go to school, get good grades, go to college, and get a good job! "Everyone is doing it!" Now I'm definitely not knocking education, in fact, I highly encourage it! But instead of going for a good job, why not start a business? Don't wait after 20-40 years to find out that all that time you were making your boss rich and paying for his/her family vacations, when you could've been building a strong financial future for you and your family. Beachbody Coaching teaches you how to build a business part-time while you are working full time at your job, and in 2 to 5 years, you will eventually be able to enjoy a 6-7 figure residual to help you live the rest of your life, the best of your life! It doesn't have to take 20-40 years to retire if you play your cards right. Be careful who you are influenced by, if it doesn't benefit you and your family in a positive way, then most likely you are wasting your time, and nobody has time for that! =)

CULTURE - I can't give up white rice, working out is a western thing, I can't speak good english, I don't have a big network, I don't have a lot of friends, my job is a workout so I don't need to workout.....I've heard all the excuses in the book. Just like anyone else, filipinos will also make excuses why they don't have any money and time to live a healthier lifestyle, and even become a Beachbody Coach. Listen, it's not a culture thing, a money thing, or a time thing, it's your life that we're talking about here. Rather than making excuses about not having enough time to workout, or not having the skills on how to become a better version of yourself financially, maybe try focusing on what is the most important thing in your life, and start making things happen. I used to make a lot of excuses, and I hid behind them all the time, because it was the easy way out. You may think that you have to work harder as a minority, but that should even be more motivation to become successful, to fight for you and what you believe in, and to show the community that yes, filipinos can also be successful as a Beachbody Coach. Now I'm not saying that Beachbody Coaching can be the solution to your health and wealth problems, I'm saying that it is, and I am proof of that. =) If you want a better life, I encourage you to refrain from making any culture excuses, just start making things happen. I started running back in mid-2011 at the age of 40 years old. Contrary to what some of my friends believe, I was actually never a runner! In fact, just the thought of running made me sick to my stomach. I was always active when I was young, and was involved in extreme sports such as skateboarding, surfing, martial arts, and mountain biking.....but never running!

Things change as you get older, and for people who are in my age bracket, you are either a couch potato or super fit, there really is no in between, at least from what I've seen in my network of friends.

I started running when my brother introduced me into the sport of obstacle course racing, but around that time, someone told me about this marathon in Boston where you had to qualify. After doing my first obstacle course race, I made a decision to make running part of my daily routine. I ended up doing a half marathon even before I did a 5K, and finished with a 1:36 time with an average of a 7:19 pace per mile. I was amazed what my P90X training has done for me because I have never ran before in my life. It's amazing what that program did for me!

I got heavily involved with obstacle course racing in late 2011, and pretty much forgot about my Boston Marathon goal. The main reason why I loved OCR (obstacle course racing) was because it didn't just focused on running. As an OCR athlete, you are required to have overall strength and endurance especially if you want to be competitive. After years of racing and even developing a project to help the sport grow, I am now focused on my Boston Marathon goal once again. I just want to mark it off of my bucket list =)


I continue to be involved in obstacle course racing, and if it wasn't for my love of the sport, I would not have become a runner. I really owe it all to my success with P90X (thanks to my brother), and the sport of OCR. Now I am focused on the Boston Marathon.

I have started a 16 week marathon training program in which I will have run over 600 miles in 4 months. But I will not just be running, I will also be incorporating strength workouts from P90X, Body Beast, and some interval training from various Insanity programs such as Asylum and Max 30. The tricky part about strength training while endurance running is finding the balance. You can't build too much mass or else it will slow your running pace, but you don't want to just run or else you will lose your muscle mass and upper body strength, and that's something that I do not want to do especially if I plan to continue obstacle course racing as well.

I decided to try out the Marathon Training Program from Nike+. The coach programs are absolutely free, and it is very easy to follow. I live a pretty busy life as a Full Time Beachbody Coach, so I enjoy working out and having a program to guide me, so I can think about other things like family, travel, and business. The Nike+ Marathon Training Coach Program fits into my lifestyle, and so far it's doing well. If you are not training for a marathon, there are other training programs for 5K, 10K, and half marathons, so it's great for all fitness levels.


I incorporate about 3 strength workouts into my week. For the most part, I will normally plan a LEG DAY (such as P90X Plyometrics, Body Beast Build Legs, X3 Triometrics etc) on Mondays. On Wednesdays I do an upper body workout (such as P90X Chest and Back, Body Beast Bulk Chest, X3 the Challenge etc) and then on Friday will will either do another upper body workout or full body interval workout (Asylum Speed and Agility, T25 Total Body, Insanity Max Interval Sports Training etc). On Thursdays which are normally a cross-training day, I will either mountain bike or do some sort of stretching workout (such as P90X X Stretch or X3 Yoga). On Sundays, I will do more stretching and just relax.

A sample of my 16 week Strength Marathon Training Program:
- Monday (Leg Day + Run)
- Tuesday (Run)
- Wednesday (Upper Body + Run)
- Thursday (Cross-train and/or Stretch/Yoga)
- Friday (Upper Body or Full Body Interval Training + Run)
- Saturday (Long Run)
- Sunday (Rest and Recovery/Stretch)

That's just a sample of what my week looks like with my Strength Marathon Training with P90X. I am always listening to my body, so if I am feeling tired or over-trained, I will take a rest day to ensure that I do not injure myself. Recovery is very important to me as I have overtrained in the past many times, and it doesn't feel good at all. Safety first guys! Nutrition also plays a key role (80%) in my training program and I will be drinking my Shakeology along with my normal eating plan of fresh whole foods, lean meats, whole grains, nuts, and lot's of greens, fruit and WATER.

I have never done a marathon before, so I am pretty excited to sign up for my first one after I am done with my 16 week program. After my first marathon, I will see how much I have improved, and then I will go into my 2nd marathon training program which will be a lot more intense with longer runs.

ANOUSONE BOUNKET
Weighing in at over 200 pounds, Anousone knew that something had to change. One day he was browsing through Facebook and was inspired by his friend, and now Coach Jay Flores. Jay encouraged him to join one of his Challenge Groups, so Anousone began his journey with the P90 Challenge which was focused more towards beginner fitness levels. At the end of his challenge, he weighed in at 155.4 pounds with 54.6 pounds lost. Always known as a Sugar/Soda/Candy Addict, Jenna laughed at her Coach who invited her to a Challenge Group. She told her Coach Vivien "I've never completed a fitness program ever", let alone a home fitness program. But Vivien believed in her, that's what Coaches do! As a happily married mother of two, Jenna always dreamed of making health and fitness more of a lifestyle, but she always made excuses, just like the rest of us. I call her by Marie =) I met her while running my Free Fit Club in downtown Tampa, FL. She was among one of the most loyal members of 813 Fit Club which I founded back in early 2011. A lot of people think that when you become a Beachbody Coach that you have to try to cater to EVERYONE! That is somewhat true, but it's really more about finding your NICHE, and once you've done that, it makes it much easier to brand yourself, along with your future fitness empire. Here are some examples of what some Beachbody Coaches specialize in and who they cater to:

- Single Parents
- College Students
- Families
- Young Professionals
- Athletes
- Personal Trainers who are interested in providing more options to their clients
- People with Weight Loss Goals
- Obstacle Course Racers
- Vegans
- Business Owners who want to diversify
- Over 50 and Fit
- Aspiring Entrepreneurs
- Pregnant Women
- Health Nuts

These are just a few examples of some NICHE MARKETS as a Beachbody Coach. As you can see, Beachbody Coaches can be anyone, and they are! What's even more exciting is that Beachbody Coaches can provide solutions to anyone who simply wants to be happy, healthy, and even financially free! Every Coach will have their own specialty, but that does not mean that they cannot help other people who have other goals. For example, I mostly help people who want to become better athletes and would like to train and prepare for an obstacle course race, endurance event or a 5K etc. But I can also help people who want to shed some pounds or want to get super ripped, that's because we (the company who we are affiliated with, Beachbody) have fitness and nutrition programs for everyone! As a Beachbody Coach, it is very important to find your niche because you will be able to make better use of your time in regards to the way that you post things on social media, how you relate to people, and all of this will come to play with your time management and productivity as a Beachbody Coach.

Here are some things to ask yourself that can maybe help you find your niche:

- What are you passionate about?
- Who do you hang around with?
- What social media channel are you savvy with?
- Which Beachbody fitness and nutrition programs have you done?
- What are your hobbies?
- Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

I have been a Beachbody Coach since late 2010, and I didn't really find my niche until I found my passion in obstacle course racing (about a year into it), so it may take some time to find your niche, but that's ok, it will happen. I absolutely love helping people become better athletes, but at the same time, I am also heavily focused on finding aspiring entrepreneurs who love living the healthy lifestyle and has a little business savviness in their blood, because it's not all about helping people with their health and fitness goals (that's only the beginning), it's also about helping them get financially fit as well, and when you put two and two together, you get one heck of an awesome lifestyle!

I have seen people who were miserable, 100 pounds overweight, and unemployed who later became super healthy and amazingly ripped, and most inspiring of all, they became successful entrepreneurs by simply sharing what Beachbody has done for them. There are so many amazing stories of success with this Beachbody Coaching Opportunity that it would take a bazillion years to tell you =) I know, I'm being a little ridiculous, but it's true, there are so many lives being changed by this fitness movement, the question is, WHY NOT YOU? Why not now?

First of all, I just wanted to let you know that I am not magnifying the negatives of Beachbody Coaching, I am merely sharing the reality of what happens, and simply offering simple solutions based on what I have done, and what many other successful coaches have done before me.  As with any business venture, there are challenges, but with adversity comes opportunity, remember that =) The people who stick it out and fight their battles to the end will reign supreme. Beachbody Coaching is one of the most rewarding things that you will ever experience, it just takes some hard work and dedication. Let's face it, most people work hard and super long hours for a boss day in and day out, so why not do it for you and your family?


Please take note of the struggles below, but most importantly, know that these struggles are meant to challenge you, not defeat you.

-  BELIEF
When you tell your children that they can do, or be whatever they want to be when they grow up, most parents really mean it because they truly BELIEVE in their kids. One of the BIGGEST reasons why a Beachbody Coach succeeds is because they become a product of the product by using the fitness programs and drinking Shakeology. Have you ever seen Steve Jobs with an Android Phone or PC? Or what about Bill Gates with an iPad? I think not! If you use your own products, you will get better results and be more willing to share it with people successfully, and that's what Beachbody Coaching is all about, sharing....NOT selling.

-  WHAT OTHERS THINK
Ask yourself this question: Are the people who you are worried about sharing this opportunity with paying your bills? Do they put food on your table and support your kids? Do they pay for your vacations, and do they really care if you actually succeed or not? I knew from the very beginning as a Beachbody Coach that it doesn't matter what other people think about what I do, because what I do has nothing to do with them, and everything to do with my family. When you start thinking about what other people think, just go back to what is the most important thing in your life, because that's what matters most. I recommend surrounding yourself with POSITIVE people who only want success for you and truly understand what your goals are, it really makes a big difference!


-  CONSISTENCY
Most people quit way too early before they achieve something great. Everyone wants to be more healthy and fit, make more money, travel the world etc. but they aren't willing to do the work everyday to get the results. Beachbody Coaching is all about sharing your healthy lifestyle, and helping others do the same thing. Success as a Beachbody Coach is not about tackling huge projects everyday, it's about doing SMALL THINGS DAILY. I think it all boils down to how big your dreams and goals are, and trust me, I used to think that dreams and goals were "cheesy", but that's because of the people I surrounded myself with, they just weren't goal-orientated. If you want change in your life, then it's simple, you have to change some things in your life, and this means doing more than you're doing right now, and connecting with trustworthy people who will keep you accountable to your goals. Being consistent is a challenge for everyone, and it's tough to do it on your own. As a Beachbody Coach, you are not alone, you have a team to help you during your good and bad days. Heck, I will help you, that's what Coaches do! =)

-  TEACHABLE
"You can't teach an old dog new tricks", that is totally false. It's more like, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks if they don't want to". I've seen people come into the Beachbody Coaching Business with some great ideas, but if it didn't work, they would get discouraged and just quit. Just a quick example on Franchising. There are thousands of franchising opportunities out there, and all of them offer a system of success, and all you have to do is follow the guidelines. Beachbody Coaching is very similar, but guess what, you're not paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in franchise fees. It's only $39.95 to become a Coach and own your own online fitness empire, and that fee is waived when you become a Coach with one of the many Fitness Challenge Packs. Imagine building a 6 or 7 figure income business in less than 2-5 years, with virtually no employees! Yes, it's totally possible, and you can do this with Beachbody Coaching by simply following the system that is in place for you. Be teachable, and see what happens! =)

-  REJECTION 
I once watched motivational speaker John C Maxwell at a Beachbody Coach Summit event in Las Vegas as he shared a story about someone who came up to him after one of his speaking engagements. This person said, "John, you are really good at speaking and motivating the crowd", and John said, "it took a lot of practice!" =) John C Maxwell has made millions speaking all over the world, but it wasn't always that easy for him. What if he quit in the very beginning when people told him that he would never make it, or told him that he was not good enough? Rejection happens to the best of us, and the people who learn to embrace it will be the ones who come out on top. When someone says NO to me, I simply just say NEXT because the NO'S really just don't matter. It might take some time to realize that, but it will happen I promise. Yes, being rejected from family and friends hurt, but that's mostly because they don't fully understand what you are doing, and they cannot see the big picture. That's completely normal =). Not everyone will understand or care about what you are doing, and it's not about that. It's about the people who see your vision, support you, and eventually join you in your venture. The most successful people in the world have clearly gone through the most rejections. If you desire success as a Beachbody Coach, or in any business or challenge for that matter, it's all about changing your focus, and treating rejection as a means to getting closer to your goal. Embrace the SUCK, it will be worth it.

In closing, we hear this all the time, but yes, the struggle is all so real. But you either let it destroy you, or you let it define you, it's your choice. Tempo Run Workouts to Up Your Game!

Ever feel like no matter how long or how fast you run, you just never get any better? Maybe you've even gotten slower? That's because your body can get easily adjusted to a routine and stagnation sets in. If you incorporate at least one Tempo Run during the week, you will most likely see better results.

Tempo runs basically help push out your lactate threshold (that burn your feel in your legs when you run fast) Tempo workouts teach your body to more quickly clear out the lactate buildup which then delays and prevents that fatigue-causing burn. 




Tempo runs also help increase your VO2Max (your body's ability to take in oxygen and use it to make energy in the muscle). Consistent use of tempo runs will actually signal your body to make more capillaries in the muscle. The more capillaries means a lot more oxygenated blood getting to the muscle.Tempo runs can vary from 4-8 miles. If you're new to tempos, it's recommended to start with a shorter distance such as 3-4 miles and work your way up.

Here are a few Tempo Run Workouts to incorporate into your weekly runs:

Traditional Tempo
Begin and end the run with a 1 mile warm up/cool down. Run these beginning and ending miles at a slow and easy conversational pace. Run the in between miles at a pace that's about 30-45 seconds slower than your 5K race pace. 

Tempo Intervals
Begin and end the run with a 1 mile warm up/cool down. Run these beginning and ending miles at a slow and easy conversational pace. For the in between mile, alternate between a 5 minute fast and a 5 minute slow interval (slightly faster than conversational pace). The fast intervals should be a run at a pace that is about 25-30 seconds slower than your 5K race pace. Continue doing these fast and slow intervals until your reach your last cool down mile. (Ex. 1 mile warm up, 3 miles alternating fast and slow intervals, 1 mile cool down)



Race Pace Tempo
The tempo workout is specifically geared towards training for a half or full marathon. Begin and end with a 1 mile warm up/cool down. Run the in between miles at your half or full marathon race pace. (Ex. 1 mile warm up, 4 miles at race pace, 1 mile cool down)

Negative Split Tempo
This one is great for teaching your mind and body getting the last minute burst of energy towards the end of the run or race. Run the first half of the run at an slow and easy conversational pace. Run the last half at a tempo pace (30-45 seconds slower than your 5K race pace) creating a negative split. (Ex. Run 3 miles at a slow pace, run last 3 miles at tempo pace)



So I hope this helps you get some better results. I try to do at least a tempo run and a tabata run session once per week along with my longer slow distance runs, and I am slowly seeing some progress. Avocado Tortilla Soup Recipe

Avocado Tortilla Soup

I snagged this amazing soup creation from the Vitamix Whole Foods Recipe Book. I was a little hesitant at first because of all the cilantro it called for which I am really not a fan of, but at the end, it turned out to be the BOMB! You can either serve this soup hot or chilled. You can probably do this with any type of food processor or large blender, but the instructions below calls for a Vitamix Blender.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Processing: 6-7 minutes
Yields: 5 cups

Here's what you need:
- 2 cups (480 ml) chicken or vegetable broth
- 5 roma tomatoes, quartered
- 1/3 bunch cilantro, stemmed
- 1 garlic clove, peeled
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 avocado, pitted, peeled
- 1/2 lime, peeled
- 1/2 cup (130g) organic canned black beans, drained
- 1/2 cup (100g) canned (drained) or fresh cooked corn kernels
- 2 ounces (56 g) tortilla chips, crushed


Avocado Tortilla Soup - Vitamix Recipe


Processing:
1. Place all ingredients, except tortilla chips, into the Vitamix container in the order listed and secure top lid.
2. Select Variable 1
3. Turn machine on and quickly increase speed to Variable 10, then to High
4. Blend for 6-7 minutes or until heavy steam escapes from the vented lid
5. Reduce speed to Variable 2 and remove the lid plug
6. Drop in tortilla chips through the lid plug opening. Blend for an additional 10 seconds
