Terrain Race Las Vegas - 2016

Terrain Racing Race Director Brad Kloha and I - Las Vegas

I am currently on a road trip filming obstacle races leading up to the OCR World Championships in Blue Mountains Canada. Just a couple weeks ago, I was in Tahoe filming the epic Spartan World Championship, you can see the video here.

From Tahoe I headed to Vegas to spend some time with my family, and I found out the Terrain Racing was hosting a race in Boulder City, NV. I contacted them to see if I could possibly check out their event and make a video. After a couple messages, I received the go ahead with my media pass.

I was shocked to find out that Terrain Racing has been around since 2011! Being from the east coast, I haven't really heard of this race series, but many of my friends kept on telling me to check them out. I finally did this past weekend, and I was totally impressed. I really enjoyed the family-friendly environment, and the customer service that the race staff provided. Overall, I had a great experience, and would highly recommend this race to anyone. Please feel free to check out my recap video, and I hope to see you at an upcoming race.

Day 3, Week Eight - 22 Minute Hard Corps | Resistance 2

Day 3 Week Eight 22 Minute Hard Corps Challenge, 22 Minute Hard Corps Resistance 2, Beachbody OCR Fit, Beachbody Workouts for Obstacle Course Racing, Obstacle Race Training with Beachbody

Ok this is going to be a very short post ha ha, but I just wanted to share some good news with you and let you know that my pull up strength was ON POINT today!

Just to give you a quick story, I actually injured my elbow mountain biking a few years ago, and it would hurt so bad while doing any type of pull up movement. Before the injury, I was able to crank out about 28 strict pull ups, and my goal was to get at least 30, and then guess what happens =)

Anyways, since starting this challenge, I feel that my pull up strength is getting much better. I still want to stay safe because I would hate to re-injure my elbow, so I am just doing what I can. After I complete my 22 Minute Hard Corps Challenge, I will post a video on how many pull ups I can actually do, so I'm pretty excited about that. If I could hit 20, that would make me happy!

Anyways, lots of things to do (like EAT lol), so just wanted to share my workout accountability video, see you all tomorrow =)

6 Extinct Obstacle Course Races I've Filmed and Miss!

6 Extinct Obstacle Course Races I've Filmed and Miss, The End of Battlefrog Series, Monster Challenges, Extreme Nation Hobie Call, Vintage Obstacle Course Races, Atlas Race Kansas, Filming OCR with GoPro, GoPro Filmmaker, Obstacle Race Training with P90X

So I've been making obstacle course racing (OCR) videos with my GoPro since 2011, and I've not only seen the FAST-GROWTH of this sport, but I've also witnessed the decline and extinction of many race companies, as well as athletes who have come and gone. I've filmed many athletes from their very first race to when they hit OCR Celebrity Status on national television. I was there when OCR wasn't even cool, we didn't know what to call it back then. I was pointing cameras at everyday people in mud way before NBC Sports and ESPN got involved. I've seen this sport grow from the VERY beginning, and it's been an amazing journey.

I'm not the type of person who get's involved with the politics of what goes wrong, and why decisions are made, that's not my cup of tea. If you've seen any of my videos, you will notice that I just focus on the positive side of things, and try to just share the sheer beauty of the sport. OCR has changed my life in many ways. I have met some wonderful people, and have experienced the most beautiful and toughest places on the planet, and it just saddens me when I see companies fold.

I create videos to help the sport grow, and when race companies fall from the face of the earth, I feel sadness for the athletes, as well as the companies. I look back at some of my "terribly-edited" videos from the past, and all I can see is joy. What other industry can get average people off the couch to pay hundreds of dollars to get tortured on a Saturday, and for some races...a whole weekend? OCR! =)

6 Extinct Obstacle Course Races I've Filmed and Miss, The End of Battlefrog Series, Monster Challenges, Extreme Nation Hobie Call, Vintage Obstacle Course Races, Atlas Race Kansas, Filming OCR with GoPro, GoPro Filmmaker, Obstacle Race Training with P90X

I know first-hand as an entrepreneur how difficult it is to run a company, so I understand that it's all about the bottom line. Companies do care about their fans, but they have lives and families too, and I think people sometimes forget about that. The only thing that we can do is respect each other's decision, and stop being judgmental about things that do not benefit us in a positive way.

I appreciate everything that these companies have strived for. They do what I love doing which is ripping people off the couch and making them feel more than just someone who has a 9-5 job. It's about regaining happiness, being humans again, sharing it with others, and that's how OCR has grown as one of the fastest growing sports in history.

I also do not believe in just one company. I do not call myself just a "Spartan" or a "Tough Mudder", I am an OCR fan. I believe that in order for this sport to grow much bigger than it is today, we need to stop criticizing other races and embrace what each of them are doing. People hate burpees, like they hate their jobs, but guess what, that's what is putting a roof over their head right now. When you do a burpee, it's a challenge, and whether you like doing it or not, the bottom line is that it is changing you, and isn't that what you wanted to do in the first place when you signed up for an obstacle race?

I see so much negativity with the industry, and I just block it all out because I only choose to see the bright side of things. I know that asking everyone to be positive is impossible, but if I can just help one person see the light of day, then I feel that it's a start.

I mean, if we had more people who would just be more positive, open-minded and choose OCR, instead of just ONE company, then we would probably have more amazing OCR options to choose from versus watching the companies that we love become extinct.

Love the sport, love OCR, it's time to help it grow. #OCRForLife

Day 7, Week Six - 22 Minute Hard Corps | Cardio 2 + Core 2

Day 7 Week Six 22 Minute Hard Corps, 22 Minute Hard Corps Cardio 2 and Core 1, Spartan Race Training, Nashville Spartan Race Sprint 2016, OCRTUBE Media Project, Free Beachbody Coaching, Become a Beachbody Coach
Watch Video Below

My Dad and I are finally finished with WEEK 6!

For this workout, we decided to do it on Sunday since I was filming a Spartan Race around the Nashville area. So even though it was a rest day, I didn't technically take a rest day since I clocked in at running almost 9 miles chasing athletes with my Gopros =)

Today's workout was Cardio 2 and Core 2. This was considered my POST SPARTAN RACE WORKOUT. I try to stay active the day after filming races so that my body stays familiar with movement instead of staying stagnant. It keeps me sharper and stronger.

Check out my Nashville Spartan Sprint 2016 video
Day 7 Week Six 22 Minute Hard Corps, 22 Minute Hard Corps Cardio 2 and Core 1, Spartan Race Training, Nashville Spartan Race Sprint 2016, OCRTUBE Media Project, Free Beachbody Coaching, Become a Beachbody Coach

I do not try to workout hard or anything, instead I mostly modify and sometimes just do stretch and mobility. After doing the 9 miles, my gout started flaring up again on top of a little soreness, so I decided to really take it easy, and just modify about 50-60% of the time. Here are the modifications that I did:

For the most part, I took away anything that was considered high-impact, and just did the alternative.

- Since my right foot is where my gout is flaring, I did single leg burpees on my left leg.

- I didn't squat as low on some reps since my quads were still burning from yesterday.

- For the switch kicks, I just did leg lifts to ensure that I didn't put anymore pressure on my right foot.

- I didn't really modify the mountain climbers, I just didn't do all the reps. With mountain climbers, there isn't too much pressure on your feet since you are in a plank push up position.

- I didn't go as high on the "high-knees" I went a bit slower and took pressure off my right foot.

These were just some of the modifications that I did to keep it safe. I still managed to get in a great workout as always. We did the Core 2 Workout right after, which is not shown in the video.

Here's our workout accountability video!

Arnel Banawa Confessions - Q&A Time

Arnel Banawa, Q&A Time, Beachbody Coach Confessions, Beachbody Coach Life, OCRTUBE, Beachbody Coach Travel, Digital Nomad Life, Obstacle Course Racing, About Arnel Banawa, How To Travel the World

Let me start off by saying that I am not the type of person who enjoys being in the SPOTLIGHT. I'm sure that a lot of you know me from some of the obstacle course racing videos that I create for my OCRTUBE media project, and you will see that most of my videos are FOCUSED on other people, and not myself =).

It brings me joy to be able to document the journey, struggles, and triumphs of the people around me, and that's one of the reasons why I am very passionate about what I do as a Beachbody Coach, I just love helping people, and making it about them.

So WHY a Q&A about me?

I've turned down a few interviews only because again, I just do not feel comfortable being in the spotlight, I actually run from it, not because I'm afraid, but mostly because I take my life and my family VERY seriously, I enjoy my private life, as I'm sure that most of you do as well.

My #FitFam =)
Arnel Banawa, Q&A Time, Beachbody Coach Confessions, Beachbody Coach Life, OCRTUBE, Beachbody Coach Travel, Digital Nomad Life, Obstacle Course Racing, About Arnel Banawa, How To Travel the World

I've learned a lot as a Beachbody Coach, in terms of leading my team and challengers to success, and it's been a rollercoaster, but these are the things that have made me SPARTAN strong. I stay out of the limelight so that I can focus on the people who matter most to me, like my family and my coach team. These people have dedicated A LOT of their blood, sweat, and tears with me, and they truly deserve my full attention, so I reserve that EXCLUSIVELY for them. =)

I've created a few social media channels for other people to learn more about me, and what I do because I know the importance of building relationships. If I'm not relatable, then why would people want me to coach them right?

A lot of people ask me what I do for a living, and they are always shocked to find out that I am a full-time Beachbody Coach! I mean, I literally run an internet fitness company from my smartphone and/or my macbook, and that's how I am able to travel and film a lot of the obstacle races that you see on my YOUTUBE channel. Again, I don't say this to brag because it was pretty damn TOUGH to get where I am, and I am just now scratching the surface and getting started. People think SUCCESS just comes easy sometimes especially if they're only looking from the outside in, BUT I struggled a lot for years! I've hit rock bottom, slept in my car for months on end, and used to live off of RAMEN NOODLES (that's a good week), so I know about struggle. I know what HARD is. It's not fun, and all I knew was that I didn't want to live that crappy life anymore, so I quit making excuses. I focused on being an honorable father to my daughter, and everything started coming into place.

My daughter and I
Arnel Banawa, Q&A Time, Beachbody Coach Confessions, Beachbody Coach Life, OCRTUBE, Beachbody Coach Travel, Digital Nomad Life, Obstacle Course Racing, About Arnel Banawa, How To Travel the World

My social media channels are focused on sharing my journey with people (good and bad) and to hopefully make an impact around the world. It's NOT to show off, or make anyone think that I am better than they are (because I'm not), I definitely have a lot of weaknesses, and I am by no means PERFECT, no way!

I am just like most of you who just wants to be happy, provide for my family, travel around the world, and leave a legacy.

So back to the Q&A, I've had a number of questions lately about what I do, and who I am, so instead of spending all day messaging and sharing on my social networks, I felt that it would make sense to post a blog on some of the common questions that I've been receiving, so here goes! =) I'm just going to cover a few questions now, and will post another blog later.

ARE YOU SINGLE?
Yes, I am single. It's not that I don't believe in marriage or relationships, it's because it's not a priority for me. I've met a ton of people who are unhappy, and they always say this, "If I could just find someone to be with me, then I would be happy". That BS!! Make yourself happy, and the person you meet someday will just enhance your life. I don't ever go out looking for relationships, it's not natural. Things will happen when it's meant to happen, so my piece of advice is to relax and enjoy your life! Learn to be happy with who you are first, and you'll be surprised how amazing your life will be.

HOW ARE YOU ABLE TO TRAVEL ALL THE TIME?
Well, I don't really travel all the time, but I have a online business that allows me to be location-independent. As long as I have internet, I can work from anywhere around the world. And FYI, this didn't happen overnight (so don't think for a minute that this opportunity just fell into my lap), I went through many failed businesses since 2002, and finally found something that gave me the opportunity to become digitally nomadic. Not everyone can travel like I do or would like to travel like I do, but I'm not like everyone, and you shouldn't be either.

Bagan, Myanmar
Arnel Banawa, Q&A Time, Beachbody Coach Confessions, Beachbody Coach Life, OCRTUBE, Beachbody Coach Travel, Digital Nomad Life, Obstacle Course Racing, About Arnel Banawa, How To Travel the World

WHAT WORKOUTS DO YOU DO AND RECOMMEND?
I've been doing Beachbody Specific Workouts since 2010. My first program that I completed was P90X which helped me hit some PR's (1:36 half marathon, 19:30 5K) and I even hit some podium wins in OCR being in the top 10% precent. I think that I've completed most of the advanced Beachbody programs (primarily the ones that are strength and athletic-based specific), and I continue to do the workouts, mostly creating hybrid programs to help me stay in peak physical condition for adventure traveling and filming races in some of the most toughest terrains around the world. They've worked for me all these years, and the company Beachbody continues to be innovative with the latest movements in exercise science. I recommend that people do whatever they feel is good for them. It's not about what I do, it's about what your goals are. If you ask me to help you, I can only give you advice based on what I've learned with my experiences with my workouts, as well as learning from some of the best OCR and endurance athletes in the world.

Arnel Banawa, Q&A Time, Beachbody Coach Confessions, Beachbody Coach Life, OCRTUBE, Beachbody Coach Travel, Digital Nomad Life, Obstacle Course Racing, About Arnel Banawa, How To Travel the World

WHY DON'T YOU RACE COMPETITIVELY ANYMORE?
Almost 3 years ago I endured my first injury while obstacle racing. I popped my knee out going down a mountain in Killington, VT. Since then, my knee has never been the same. I also unfortunately inherited the infamous Gout from my family line, which has gotten a lot worse with age, especially with some of my more extreme workouts, including long distance running. I was feeling sorry for myself for the longest time because of the athletic goals that I set for myself, the ones that I could not achieve because of my condition. But I have come to a realization that I cannot control everything, so it's best to make due with what I have, and make the best of my life and appreciate the fact that I am alive and healthy.

I still workout, I still run, I still live an active lifestyle, and instead of training for a race, I am simply training just to be active and happy. These days I am more focused on my nutrition, coaching people, and growing my cause-related media project.

So to wrap things up, I'd like to say that I've had a wonderful 45 years of learning the in's and out's of life, and I look forward to continuing my journey because the day that I stop learning is the day I stop living, and I'm definitely not done yet!

WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
I have been involved in the OCR industry since 2011, it was through P90X which my brother Fermin introduced me to, that I was introduced to the sport. I decided to do this referral type program for the following reasons:

-  To share my passion for the obstacle course racing industry
-  To help raise awareness for charity through my OCRTUBE media project
-  To help people understand that there are many training options for obstacle racing
-  To rip people off the couch!

OCRTUBE.com is a cause-related media project focused on helping the sport of OCR grow while raising awareness for charity. I do this by traveling around the world on my own expense and filming obstacle course and adventure races.

Hammer and Chisel Challenge - Week 5

WHOA! Week 5 of my Hammer and Chisel Challenge is finally over ha ha! Here is how my week went.

Day 1, Week 5
So I had to repeat my 5th week because I literally killed my workouts a lot more than I should've and my gout unfortunately started to flare up. For those of you who know about GOUT, you definitely smell what I'm stepping in right? It hurts! I took advantage of some rest and recovery, and I also did a lot more stretching. Yes, I know, I need more yoga in my life =)

Today I did Total Body Chisel with 10 Minute Ab Chisel. I felt so good that I also did a 4+ mile run. It was a great start of the week!

Day 2, Week 4
Did Hammer Power plus 10 Minute Hammer Abs. So this is all pretty new to me as far as doing abs a few days in a row. I am so used to other programs such as P90X where you work certain muscle groups and allow ample rest in order for your muscles to recover and build. Well, that was classic P90X, I know X3 is a little similar to Hammer and Chisel where some of the workouts are full body workouts back to back, multiple days in a row. All I know is that with Hammer and Chisel, you are constantly killing the leg workouts! So if you are interested in this challenge, keep in mind that your legs are going to be really sore almost every day. But always remember to listen to your body, and take it easy on some days. I feel that the Beachbody Performance Recover drink helps with soreness and gets me ready for the next day.

Day 3, Week 4
Chisel Balance was on the menu for tonight! If you've read some of my previous workout posts, balance is something that I am not really good at. It's why I fail a bunch of balance obstacles at some of the obstacle races that I participate in. I constantly am working on this skill, and have gotten much better. It has a lot to do with having a strong core, which is another something that I am working on building back up.

I worked out in hiking pants tonight, so although it looks like it would be hot to workout in, it wasn't that bad, plus it was a little chilly outside, so it kinda made the house cooler than usual. Oh btw, I leave for Central America tomorrow, so I'll be extending my workout once I set foot in Nicaragua.

Day 4, Week 5
Oh it's REST DAY today, and I'll be leaving for Nicaragua this evening, so what else is there to do but drink my Shakeology! Oh, and you better believe that I am taking some of my superfoods nutrition with me when I leave the country for almost 2 weeks. I never leave home with it. If you're wondering what I'll be doing in Nicaragua, I'll be filming the Fuego y Agua Survival run, I'll post the video below.

Day 5, Week 5
I'm in CENTRAL AMERICA!! So when I travel, I don't always have access to a gym or ideal workout surroundings. But the best way to get over these challenges is to just work with what you have. You may not get the same intensity because of the lack of equipment, but it's a lot better than doing nothing.

Today's workout was ISO Speed Hammer, and I used everything from a couple adjoining bunk beds to my own Patagonia duffel bag. I even used my laptop case for the exercises that required less weight. Again, I may not achieved the same burn factor that I am normally used to, but it's all about "showing up" and not making excuses. But hey, I do have my bad days too, but that's why I have a personal success partner and an online accountability group to kick my ass when I start feeling lazy. If you don't have a support group like this, message me and you can be a part of mine! =)

Day 6, Week 5
It was a long day today. I was at San Jorge waiting on a ferry to take me to Ometepe Island (where the Fuego y Agua Survival Run will be). A neighboring boat capsized and the ferry service was delayed for about 6 hours, it royally sucked lol. But I had fun with some of the locals and had the opportunity to just appreciate the scenery. Nicaragua is an amazing place!

Day 7, Week 5
Today I woke up to an amazing traditional Nicaragua Breakfast. Soon after I rented a scooter to explore Ometepe Island. I did Total Body Hammer for today's workout. I didn't go hard at all and again had limited equipment. I used my Patagonia pack for most exercises that required dumbbells, and I did lat push ups to replace the pull ups, and again my laptop bag for the del flys. =) #WhateverItTakes

Btw, did I mention how beautiful Ometepe Island is? I have to really thank my Beachbody Business for allowing me the freedom to travel and live my passion. Working out in another part of the world and seeing so many amazing places is something that I never thought I would be able to do.

Another week done, and I'm a "happy camper" =)

Here's the video that I filmed and edited. It was probably the TOUGHEST race I ever had to film. Hiking up Volcan Concepcion was a workout in itself, but the views made it all worth while. Enjoy the video, and I'll see you somewhere around the world!
